Making Room for Black Joy is the second workshop in a two-part wellbeing series for Black men, following The Pressure Zone.
Created by Improving Access for Black Men (IABM) and delivered in collaboration with Keeping Generations Healthy (KGH), the session uses psychological ideas in everyday language to look at how our beliefs about ourselves, other people and the world are shaped. We'll consider the influence of family, culture, history, society and our own experiences, and how these can affect our wellbeing, relationships and the choices we make, sometimes without us fully noticing.
We'll also spend time with the idea of Black joy, its history, what it has meant across different Black experiences, and how it can show up through culture, community, creativity, faith, humour, rest, resistance and connection. Joy does not require us to ignore difficulty or pretend everything is okay. It can exist alongside pressure, grief and challenge.
There is no single definition of Black joy. You'll be invited to take what feels useful, think about what joy, purpose and a meaningful life look like for you, and consider what you might want to make more room for.
The session is reflective, practical and gently thought-provoking. We'll notice patterns, think about what matters, and turn some of that thinking into realistic steps for everyday life.
Come as you are. There may be tears, probably some laughs, and plenty of good conversation.
There will also be an opportunity to access further free one-to-one or other appropriate support after the workshop.
